Commentary: Humanitarian crisis in Gaza exposes Western double standard on human rights

Following the devastating loss of over 30,000 lives in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel's continuous strikes since last October, the world is witnessing not only a harrowing scale of human suffering, but also the ugly truth of Western double standard regarding human rights.

As government officials and representatives worldwide convene in Geneva for the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, the protracted tragedy unfolding in Gaza underscores the imperative to safeguard the human rights of all ethnic groups and all people in a fair, equal and effective way.

Death is but one facet of the despair confronting civilians in Gaza. Since 2007, when Israel enforced a sweeping blockade, the region has been besieged by humanitarian crises, including shortages of food, medicine, and clean water for daily sustenance. The ongoing conflict only compounds the already acute scarcity of essential resources for survival.

US Airman Aaron Bushnell died after an extreme form of protest in which he lit himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington D.C.

As Aaron Bushnell walked to the Israeli embassy, he declared on film that no matter how extreme his next course of action might seem, it was incomparable to what the Palestinians in Gaza were suffering. He was referring to the US government's role in arming and aiding Israel both militarily and politically in the Israeli government's military operations in Gaza.

This was the world Aaron Bushnell woke up into while serving in the US military. He awoke to immense injustice, the injustice he was unable to ignore.

Evil plots revealed

There are "solid bits of evidence" proving that India supports terrorist forces in some Pakistani areas like Balochistan province, providing them with money, weapons, and training, some sources close to the matter told the Global Times.

While continually suppressing some of its rivals and neighbors in the international community with the excuse of anti-terrorism, India has secretly funded terrorist forces in Pakistan, in various parts of the South Asian country, such as its separatist-plagued Balochistan, inciting local secessionists to undermine regional stability through terrorist attacks, they revealed.

Through looking into historical materials and related news reports from both Pakistani and Indian media sources, as well as speaking with sources and observers who are familiar with the situation in Balochistan, the Global Times found that India has a long history of backing terrorism in Pakistan.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict is about to enter its third year, and NATO has no plans to end the bloodshed there. The latest evidence is NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg's statement -the West must be prepared for "decades-long confrontation" with Russia. Just two days before Stoltenberg's remarks were published, Russian President Vladimir Putin articulated in his first interview with a Western media outlet in two years: We are ready to talk.

One doesn't have to be a geopolitical expert to make the judgment on who is preventing the conflict from coming to an end.

The West does not seek war with Russia, but should still "prepare ourselves for a confrontation that could last decades," Stoltenberg told German newspaper Welt Am Sonntag in an interview published on February 10.

The declaration - the West does not seek war with Russia - is as hypocritical as the US, which keeps bombing here and there while saying it does not seek conflict. "What Stoltenberg said, in essence, is a call for war mobilization, an attempt to hype up a war-like atmosphere to further strengthen NATO's interests gained during the Russia-Ukraine conflict," Shen Yi, a professor at Fudan University, told the Global Times.

The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have not distracted Washington from flexing its military muscles in the Asia-Pacific. Through one drill after another, the US is coercing regional countries into taking its side, further intensifying regional conflicts and transforming the Asia-Pacific into a more dangerous place.

From Wednesday to Thursday, US, Australian and Japanese warships conducted a trilateral joint operation in the South China Sea to "promote transparency, rule of law, freedom of navigation and all principles that underscore security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific." On Monday, as a part of the ongoing Cope North 2024 multinational air exercise, more than 80 military aircraft and some 3,000 troops from the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada and France participated in an elephant walk, a close formation of aircraft taxiing en masse before takeoff, in Guam to flaunt the synergy of the six countries' air forces in the air.

Experts told the Global Times that these military drills, as an important part of the substantial implementation of the US' Indo-Pacific Strategy, intend to strengthen military cooperation between the US and its Asia-Pacific allies, but the real drive is to prepare for a possible clash against Beijing, Washington's imagined military enemy.

National dignity and security should be defended with powerful military capability

With what should national dignity and security be defended?

The answer to this question was exactly clarified again at the 10th Session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK held in January this year.

To safeguard justice and peace, aspire toward progress and development and promote friendship and unity—foreign policy stand of DPRK

It is the steadfast foreign policy stand of the DPRK to safeguard justice and peace, aspire toward progress and development and promote friendship and unity.

In an important policy speech he made at the 10th Session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said that the DPRK will never tolerate the heinous infringement on its sovereignty by the US which is wantonly trampling down and plundering world peace and stability with illegal double standards, regarding anti-imperialist independence as its immutable and consistent first national policy, but will strive to realize international justice based on respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and establish a new international order.

The DPRK sets it as its primary task to steadily strengthen its relations with socialist countries.

Socialism is the core force of anti-imperialism and independence and a decisive factor promoting the struggle to shatter the imperialists' moves towards aggression and war and realize global independence.

Socialism, whose basic aim is to defend and realize the independence of the masses, and whose intrinsic demand is peace, regards it as one of its basic missions to ensure national security and contribute to global peace.

China's No. 1 central document highlights rural revitalization

On February 3, 2024, the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the State Council of China jointly issued the "Opinions on Learning and Applying the Experience of the Thousand Villages Demonstration and Ten Thousand Villages Renovation Project to Effectively Promote the Comprehensive Revitalization of Rural Areas." This is the 21st "No. 1 central document" of China which has been guiding the overall work on agriculture and rural development since the turn of the century, reflecting the continuous and consistent focus of the central government on rural revitalization.

What has been particularly addressed this year is that for the first time, the "Thousand Villages Demonstration and Ten Thousand Villages Renovation" (from now on referred to as the Project), as a typical case, has been written into the "No.1 central document." Although there were many local reform experience examples written into the previous "No.1 central documents," it is the first time that the Project from the Zhejiang experience has been fully reflected in the title of "No.1 central document." Why is it so special and what are its key values?

Taiwan falls hook, line, and sinker for Washington's tricks

In recent years, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has leaned on the U.S. to advance the so-called "Taiwan independence," undermining stability across the Taiwan Straits. The DPP authorities thought the U.S. had their back. But it turns out that the U.S. only sees them as a pawn to contain China.

In response to the "growing threat from Russia," the U.S. is planning to station nuclear warheads – three times as strong as the Hiroshima bomb – in the UK for the first time since 2008, The Telegraph reported.

Senior officials on both sides of the Atlantic are urging for military preparations for a potential war between NATO and Russia. "I think we need to go further and look carefully at conscription," the UK's former top NATO commander General Sir Richard Sherriff told Sky News. Earlier, U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro called for Downing Street to "reassess" the size of its armed forces.

Shouting security, Washington's nuclear sharing is instead putting Europe at the risk of a nuclear war.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Wednesday kicked off "Exercise Steadfast Defender 2024," its largest military drills since the Cold War. Approximately 90,000 troops from NATO's 31 members and Sweden are participating, with the associated exercises running until May 31. Russian media said NATO has openly admitted for the first time that the exercise is in response to a "Russian attack" and aims to convey to Western populations that "this war is inevitable."

The exercise comes at two crucial junctures - the Russia-Ukraine conflict is entering its third year, and the US is in an election year. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating. With the Ukrainian military consistently facing setbacks on the battlefield, NATO, as the instigator of this conflict, has chosen to exert military pressure on Russia. Experts believe that NATO's goal is to continue shaping the "Russian threat," gain support from EU citizens for its anti-Russia policies, and justify further defense spending and economic pressure on Russia.

This NATO exercise will further escalate tensions in Europe, said Wang Xianju, a senior research fellow at the School of Global and Area Studies at Renmin University of China. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for nearly two years, with the international community advocating for peace. However, NATO is going against the tide, provoking and pressuring Russia through large-scale military exercises, thus creating confrontation across the world.

In recent years, the US has turned a blind eye to its serious issues of forced labor and racism. Sticking to a cold war mentality, zero-sum thinking and hypocritical "double standards," it challenges justice with its hegemony to advance its selfish interests under the guise of "democracy," "freedom" and "human rights." It fabricates the lies of "genocide" and "forced labor" in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, attempting to contain China and hinder its peaceful rise and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. This seriously violates international law and the basic principles of international relations while interfering in China's internal affairs. The people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang are outraged by this and are firmly opposed to it.

Journalist and filmmaker Gonzalo Lira, a national of the US and Chile, has died while in a jail in Ukraine. Lira's family reported the death on January 12, which was then confirmed by the US Department of State.

Lira had been in pre-trial detention since May 2023, on accusations of justifying Moscow’s military operation against Kiev. According to a handwritten note Lira’s sister received on January 4, provided to the Grayzone by her father, Lira had severe health problems caused by pneumonia and a collapsed lung, which began in mid-October. Ukrainian prison authorities only acknowledged the issue on December 22, and stated he would undergo surgery.

The journalist’s father, Gonzalo Lira Sr., said that his son had been “tortured,” while the US Embassy in Kiev “did nothing” to help him.

Increased US-Finland military cooperation escalates regional tensions

Recently, the US and Finland signed a defense cooperation agreement to further enhance their cooperation in military, security, and other fields. According to the agreement, Finland will open 15 areas including air bases, naval bases, training areas, and warehouses for use by the US. The move signified that the US-led NATO had tightened its encirclement of Russia again.

For days to come, NATO and Russia will position their frontline strategic game along the border line between Finland and Russia spanning over 1,300 kilometers, further escalating their military confrontation in the Nordic region.

In April 2023, Finland joined NATO as its 31st member state, marking the termination of military non-alignment strategy for the country. Finland occupies a geographically significant position by bordering Russia while establishing a stronghold in the Baltic Sea to the south and gaining entry into the Arctic region to the north.

Finland also has a population of about 5.6 million, standing armed forces comprising 23,000 troops, and the ability to quickly conscript more than 200,000 reservists in case of wars. The Finnish military is proficient in winter combat operations, so the US special operations forces had previously particularly traveled to this country to learn winter special operations skills.

Finland’s overall strength is stronger compared with the three Baltic states. By concluding the defense cooperation agreement with Finland, the US will further strengthen its control over the Nordic region. According to the agreement, the US has access to both the military bases and northern railways of Finland and is allowed to set up ammunition storage facilities along the railways to the border between Finland and Russia. The agreement also involves prepositioning defense equipment and materials on the territory of Finland by US forces, ensuring the security of facilities and areas employed by the US military, and criminal jurisdiction issues.

The defense cooperation agreement between the US and Finland came two weeks after the former signed a similar agreement with Sweden, which granted the US the privilege to use 17 military bases of Sweden. Up to now, the US has concluded defense cooperation agreements with multiple European countries including Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Denmark. These indicate that the US intends to gradually develop the ability to blockade the Baltic Sea to confine the actions of Russian Baltic fleets to the Gulf of Finland when needed. It can be predicted that under the relentless pressure of the NATO-led US, Russia will take measures such as accelerating the establishment of the Leningrad Military District in response.

On the morning of March 21, 2014, the Syrian village of Kessab was attacked with a combined force of Islamist jihadists and the Turkish army. Among the irregular militia were brigades belonging to the Free Syrian Army, Turkmen tribes and Al Qaeda-linked Al Nusra and the self-proclaimed Islamic State. All were working in tandem in the resulting massacre. And the evidence shows that the Ankara and Washington governments were fully complicit in the atrocity.

The dawn assault on the mainly Armenian Christian village of 2,000 inhabitants began with heavy artillery fire from Turkish army positions across the border in Turkey’s Hatay Province. Turkish army helicopters were also used to strafe Kessab homes and farms. The village is located in the Jebel Al-Aqra mountains overlooking the Mediterranean Sea only a few kilometres from the Turkish border in Syria’s Latakia Province.

After the initial salvos from the Turk army, the village was then attacked with thousands of militants who streamed across the border in pick-up trucks. Among the assault force were nationals from Chechnya, Afghanistan, Tunisia, Morocco, Saudi Arabia – as well as British and Australian, according to survivors.

Most of the Kessab residents managed to escape in panic from the advancing jihadists in cars and other vehicles to the southern city of Latakia, which is about an hour’s drive away and is under the control of the Syrian government.

But what transpired in the next days was a massacre of villagers who were left stranded. In total, 88 mainly elderly residents were slaughtered. Thirteen of the victims were beheaded. One young man, 21-year-old Kevork Djurian, was executed in front of his parents. The killers just laughed at his father Papken’s anguish. The jihadists refused to let the father bury his son, saying that he was «an Armenian dog».

Kessab was occupied by the jihadists for nearly three months before theSyrian Arab Army finally routed the militants and retook the village in mid-June 2014. Today, it still remains under Syrian government control.

Two witnesses to the slaughter have separately told this author of the event and its aftermath. One is an American citizen who has lived in Syria for more than 20 years. She is a medical professional who has a family home in Kessab. On the morning of the opening assault, she was in Latakia, but she tended to the survivors who fled to the main Armenian church in Latakia for sanctuary. As well as caring for the traumatised people, some of whom were her neighbours and friends, she carefully noted their accounts of how the initial attack unfolded. When the Syrian army later retook Kessab in June, the American medic returned to the village and witnessed the devastation that the jihadists had inflicted on homes, public buildings and churches.

Another witness is Irish peace activist, Dr Declan Hayes. He also managed to reach Kessab in the days following its recapture by the Syrian army. Hayes interviewed survivors and recorded the scenes of looting and destruction left behind by the fleeing anti-government militia.

«I interviewed the man whose son was slain in front of his eyes», says Hayes. «The jihadists left the young man’s bloodied corpse lying on the ground for three days outside the family home just to torment his parents».

Without exception, all the villagers said that the assault began with artillery fire and raids by helicopter gunships from Turk territory. «The border is heavily militarised with Turk army positions everywhere on the Turkish side. There is no doubt that this attack was launched with the direct involvement of the Turkish government in Ankara», adds Hayes.

Kessab is in the same mountainous location where Turkish F-16 fighter jets last week shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber, which had been carrying out raids on jihadist groups. The Russian plane came down in Syrian territory and one of its pilots was murdered as he parachuted to the ground by Turkmen militants. The Turkmen are Syrian citizens who are ethnically related to Turks across the border.

The American-Syrian woman (whose name has been withheld by this author on request) says that the Turkmen played an important role in the slaughter of Kessab. «They know all the roads, trails and paths into and out of Kessab. They were the ones who led the attackers into the village», she says.

Churches and a cultural centre in the village were desecrated. The attackers moved from house-to-house killing terrified dwellers and then they looted everything that was not nailed down or even those possessions that were nailed down. Money, jewellery, televisions, fridges, doors, windows, furnishings and farm equipment were systematically plundered and hauled back in trucks to be sold off across the border in Turkey.

Adding to the crimes, a group of about 30 elderly village folk were then abducted by the marauders and taken to the Turkish town of Vakifli some 20 kilometres across the border. They were held there by armed militants for several weeks before they were flown by the Turk authorities to the city of Tripoli in Lebanon. From there the people were able to make their way back to the sanctuary of Latakia. The circuitous route was chosen by the Turk regime in order to conceal its involvement in the crime.

During their abduction, the group was visited by an official American delegation that included the then US ambassador to Turkey, Francis Ricciardone. Ricciardone introduced himself through an interpreter. The

petrified Kessab folk pleaded with the American official to intervene for their release. But he left them in their plight. What he wanted to know through his questioning was if any of the people from Kessab were American citizens.

As the American medic pointed out to this author: «There are a few US citizens like me who live in Kessab. There is a big diaspora community of Armenian Syrians in the United States and many of them have homes back in Syria. It seems that the American ambassador was worried that if any US citizens were among the Kessab survivors this would rebound badly for the American government if that news got out».

As noted, once the US ambassador established that there were apparently no American citizens involved in the aftermath of the Kessab assault, he duly left them to their fate of captivity in Turkey.

What that encounter illustrates is that Washington must have been fully aware of what went down in Kessab. How else would the US diplomat know to show up to question the abducted villagers?

In the days following the attack on the village, Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the United Nations, issued a perfunctory, bland statement about Washington’s «concern» over the violence. But Washington did not specify who the guilty parties were, nor did it issue any censure of the Turk government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was the prime minister at that time. He is now the president.

In fact, a subsequent statement issued by State Department official Victoria Nuland claimed that the Turk government had no involvement in the Kessab incident. However, the Russian, Syrian and Armenian governments did make explicit condemnations of the massacre.

The Turkish government claimed that it had no role in the attack. In an official release, the Erdogan regime said: «The allegations by some circles that Turkey is providing support to the opposition forces by letting them use its territory or through some other ways during the conflict which have intensified recently in the Latakia/Kessab region are totally unfounded and untrue».

But the testimonies cited in this article show that the Turk authorities were directly involved in the military assault and the orchestration of jihadist militants. The Ankara government’s denials of what happened in Kessab are thus barefaced lies.

On April 1, 2014, 12 days after the assault began, Ahmed Jarba, the leader of the Western-backed Syrian National Council (SNC), arrived in Kessab. The SNC is the exiled political wing of the Free Syrian Army. Jarba, who is a protégé of the Saudi regime, went there to inspect the occupation and congratulate the militants on their successful breach of government-held territory in Latakia. The breach of territory to the Mediterranean coast was considered a significant victory for the militants. The following month, in May, Jarba was received in the White House by President Barack Obama. He was also greeted by Obama’s National Security advisor, Susan Rice.

The «rape of Kessab», as Dr Declan Hayes has called it, was fully conducted by fighters belonging to the Western-backed FSA, along with jihadist brigades comprising Turkmen tribesmen and Al Qaeda-linked Al Nusra and Islamic State.

The incident serves as a microcosm of the entire four-and-a-half-year-old Syrian conflict. The mainly Armenian Christian village of Kessab is home to all religious sects that reside in Syria, including Alawite and Sunni Muslims. The farming community has lived peaceably together for centuries and has never been persecuted by the Syrian government of President Assad. The only previous persecution was a century ago, in 1915, when the Turk Ottoman empire carried out the Armenian genocide, when 1.5 million Armenians were exterminated. Tragically, many survivors of the Kessab massacre last year are descendants of that first genocide.

On the morning of March 21 last year, the community of Kessab was plunged into an orgy of barbarism carried out by Western, Turk and Saudi-backed jihadists. The whole notion contrived by Western governments and their mainstream media that the West is backing «secular, moderate rebels» in Syria fighting against a sectarian, despotic regime is thus exposed as a vile charade, as the carnage at Kessab shows.

Of particular import is the criminal role played by the Turk government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, not only in the orchestration of the slaughter at Kessab, but, more generally, throughout the entire Syrian conflict.

Erdogan has this week flatly denied claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Ankara is complicit in fuelling the conflict in Syria by supporting terrorists through an industrial-scale campaign, involving the smuggling of oil for weapons. Erdogan has even said that he will resign if it is proven that his regime is complicit. His arrogant confidence seems to stem from his regime’s brutal suppression of Turk media publishing verifiable articles that Turkish state intelligence has indeed been running truck-loads of weapons into Syria.

Previously, by way of attempting to absolve the Turk state from charges of terrorist collusion, Erdogan claimed that weapons were being sent to help Turkmen «brothers» to defend themselves from the Syrian army. Following the brutal murder of the Russian pilot by Turkmen jihadists last week, Erdogan this week changed his tune and claimed that weapon convoys into Syria were allegedly being sent to the «Free Syrian Army».

But, as the Kessab massacre demonstrates, the so-called «moderate» FSA is an integral and indistinguishable component of the proxy terrorist army that Ankara and its Washington ally are supporting to overthrow the elected government of President Assad. Any difference is patently just a figment of imaginative propaganda.

Obama, while at the Paris climate change summit this week (appropriately, a «hot-air» conference of world leaders), has this week reiterated calls on Russia to focus its military campaign on the Islamic State and to halt its aerial attacks on «moderate rebels».

The American president and his Turk ally are in no position to lecture anybody about «terrorists» and «moderates». They are all part of the same criminal gang, and that gang includes Obama and Erdogan.
